Location: 685 Market (south side) at Annie, near 3rd.
The 10-story Monadnock Building sits directly across Market from Lotta's Fountain, between the Palace Hotel and the Hearst Building. It was under construction (architect: Fredrick H. Meyer) at the time of the 1906 earthquake and fire (scaffolding at left in first image below, ca. 1905). Although heavily damaged by the earthquake, the building survived attempts to dynamite it during the ensuing fire (second image below), and it was completed in 1907. Trompe-l'oeil murals by Evans and Brown in the lobby date from a 1986-1987 renovation.
